The conspiracy of Absalom

1 Some time later Absalom got a chariot, horses, and an escort of fifty men.

2 He got up early and stayed by the road that led to the city gate. Whenever anyone brought a cause to be decided by the king, Absalom would call him and ask what city he came from. The person answered that he was from one of the tribes of Israel,

3 And Absalom said, "His cause is valid and lawful, but there is no representative of the king to hear it."

4 And Absalom added, "If I had been appointed judge of this land, all those who had a cause or a matter of law would come to me, and I would do them justice."

5 And whenever a man approached him to bow down in a sign of respect, Absalom stretched out his hand, embraced him, and kissed him.

6 So Absalom did so with all the Israelites who came and asked the king to do them justice. Thus he gained the loyalty of the men of Israel.

7 At the end of four years Absalom said to the king, "Let me go to Hebron to fulfill a vow I have made to the Lord.

8 When thy servant was in Geshur in Syria, he vowed: If the Lord permit me to return to Jerusalem, I will worship him in Hebron. "

9 "Go in peace!" Said the king. And he went to Hebron.

10 Absalom secretly sent messengers to all the tribes of Israel, saying, "As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, say: Absalom is king in Hebron."

11 And Absalom brought two hundred men out of Jerusalem. They had been invited and knew nothing or suspected what was happening.

12 After offering sacrifices, Absalom sent for Ahithophel from the city of Gilo, David's counselor. The conspiracy gained strength, and the number of those who followed Absalom grew.
